Michel Chossudovsky on Syrian war

US-NATO "Humanitarian Intervention" in Syria: Towards a Regional War?

Michel Chossudovsky has given a important, hour-long interview in which he talks in detail about the regional nature of the conflict in Syria.

I believe it is important to hear his message because he successfully deconstructs the whole propaganda narrative created by the western media which is designed to create an impression of a repressive regime that has sought to crush a legitimate opposition which by its nature is similar to the Arab spring in Egypt, Tunisia and other countries and which has carried out the most unspeakable atrocities.

He points out how this narrative is false, right from the start.

The truth is that the western powers, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been giving material assistance from the start and there have been western special forces on the ground including French parachutists who were repatriated only prior to the recent French elections.

This was never about a protest movement but was well-armed insurrection from the start which included Jihadist fighters trained and supported by the west.
I was brought up on the 'reasonable ' BBC, and experienced first-hand how easy it is, reading or (especially) watching the western media how easy it is to be lulled believing the mainstream narrative – that perhaps the regime was directly responsible for Houla and other narratives. From there it a short step into believing the narrative of NATO being there to defend 'human rights'

The whole trouble is that it is all false, and falls in line with a succession of false-flag operations that have been used throughout history to justify aggressive war, from Cuba in the 1890s to Hitler's invasion of Poland in 1939 to the start of wars in Vietnam and Iraq.

The western media has played a role of supporting the propaganda war and perpetuating a myth of atrocities committed by 'the regime' as well as in some cases fabricating stories and, according to Chossudovsky, turning reality 'upside down'

This is well-documented in a piece by James Corbett, Faking It: How the Media Manipulates the World into War

The advantage that the propaganda machine has is the lack of independent media on the ground in Syria and the 'fog of war' as Syria descends into full-blown civil war.

We do however have the accounts such as that of the Russian journalist Marat Musin who has chronicled witness accounts of the Houla massacre and shows that the victims were Shiites and supporters of the regime and perpetrated largely by mercenaries and professional killers operating under the auspices of the self-proclaimed Free Syrian Army (FSA)

We tend to think in turns of if there is war in the region. In fact war is already being waged in Syria and a proxy war being fought through propaganda, terror attacks, cyber warfare and sanctions against Syria and a largely-failed oil embargo against Iran.

At present Iran is showing all signs of being a strong opponent and the west has been weakened in key areas, such as having its forces cut off from supplies in Pakistan and the failure of the oil embargo against Iran.
However, should the Assad regime in Damascus fall the correlation of forces may well change yet again.

This is the importance of Syria.

Chossudovsky maintains that opposition to war has to come from public opinion; however he is fairly despairing about the state of the anti-war movement and makes the point that either it is a matter of being opposed to the war or of human rights – you cannot have both.

He points out, I think correctly that Russia cannot be fully relied upon not to cave in to western demands. The leadership is divided and there is a strong pro-western group opposing Putin in Russia. It is worth pointing out in this regard that a delegation of anti-Putin Russians were at the Bilderberg conference in Chantilly, Virginia recently, including neo-Liberal Garri Kasparov.

At this present time we have a corrupt regime in Washington that is pursuing war against Syria and Iran but is sufficiently sane (just) to keep its finger off the button.
It is worth asking whether there is a situation worse than we have at present with Bloody Barack.

I fear that there is, and if a far-Right republican president in the form of ….is elected in the United States, and an insane government under Netanyahu in Israel then all bets could be off and we could get the suicidal all-out war against Iran that we are all fearing.

I pray not.
