Magma agitation under Indonesia: Mount Lokon volcano erupts 800 times since July

17 December, 2012

Mount Lokon in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, erupted at around 12 p.m. local time on Monday following escalating volcanic activity.

"Ashes from the eruption rose to 3,000 meters. Local residents have been asked to take precautions," the chief of the Lokon and Mahawu monitoring station, Farid Ruskanda Bima, in Tomohon on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

Mount Lokon has shown an increase in volcanic activity since early December. The Lokon and Mahawu monitoring station recorded eruptions on Dec. 3, Dec. 5 and Dec. 8, spouting volcanic dust up to 3,500 meters into the sky.

The volcano had also erupted several times in October and September.

NZ: VOLCANIC ALERT BULLETIN: WHITE ISLAND VOLCANO

Volcanic Alert Level: 2 (increased from 1)
Aviation Colour Code: Orange (increased from Yellow)

Spiny Lava Dome – A New and Unusual Style of Eruptive Activity At White Island GNS Science volcanologists have noticed a spiny lava dome at White Island in an existing small crater formed as a result of eruptions in August. The Volcanic Alert Level has been raised to 2 and the Aviation Colour Code to Orange.

On Monday we were able to see a spiny lava dome that has grown in a crater formed by an eruption on August 5. We were really lucky the steam was not too thick and got great views. The dome is probably 20 – 30 metres across and has spines sticking up. In more than 30 years visiting White Island I've never seen anything like it”, said GNS Science volcanologist Brad Scott.

If you imagine a volcano is like a tube of toothpaste then a lava dome is like the congealed, dried toothpaste that has come out of the tube. It doesn't movelike a lava flow but grows from the inside as new magma comes up and pushes the already cooled magma upwards and outwards” said Mr Scott.

A close up view of the dome. The dome is made of thick, relatively cool and congealed lava and has prominent spines. The dome is about 20 – 30 metres across. In the foreground is a small, cold lake.

Comments from tour operators at White Island suggest the dome may have been visible for two weeks, but not as clearly as Monday. How long the dome has been growing is unknown, but possibly since the ash eruption in early August.

Lava domes are usually formed by magma that has lost most of its gases so that it is very sticky. This causes the magma to pile up over the volcanic event and form a dome. Lava domes are common at some volcanoes, but have never been seen before at White Island.

Magma last reached the surface at White Island in 2000. At that time it was erupted explosively as molten rocks called volcanic bombs, rather than forming a dome.

We've raised the Volcanic Alert Level and Aviation Colour Code to reflect the new style of eruptive activity”, said GNS Science head volcanologist Gill Jolly.

Our concern is that lava dome growth can be accompanied by explosive eruptions and could impact people on the island. We need to see if the dome is continuing to grow. If it's not growing then we will be less concerned”.
GNS Science continues to closely monitor White Island through the GeoNet project.

More than 20 flood warnings issued as weather looks set to turn from bad to worse

18 December, 2012

Forecasters have warned people to expect up to 70 days of unsettled conditions as a series of wet weather systems engulf the UK.

And pockets of England have been told to prepare for yet further flooding after the Environment Agency issued another round of warnings.

Parts of England and Wales were brought to their knees last month when flood water surged through streets and down roads, cutting off whole communities and forcing dozens to flee their homes.

Rivers burst their banks and fields were flooded as several days' rain fell in just a few hours.

Sections of the transport network also ground to a halt as train travel was disrupted and some small passenger planes grounded.

The UK has experienced pockets of mild, dry weather in the run-up to Christmas, but that is all expected to change by tomorrow.

John Lee, a forecaster with MeteoGroup - the weather division of the Press Association - said: "It is going to be quite unsettled, wet and windy across the UK for the next few days.

"We're looking at 70 days ahead and in that time it is looking unsettled with a succession of Atlantic systems coming to the UK.

"Does that mean 70 days of rain? No, but it is going to be mild and unsettled until Christmas."

Mr Lee said the east coast of England could expect gusty winds too, before the weather system starts clearing from Cornwall and Devon on Friday.

However, he said this would likely be replaced by yet another band of wet weather.

"It is not uncommon for this time of year, so I think people should expect a few showers."

It comes as the Environment Agency placed five areas under flood warnings - the second most serious of three types of weather warnings, meaning some flooding is expected.

There are three such warnings in place in the South West - including the Somerset Levels - and two for the Anglian region. More than 20 flood alerts have also been issued this evening, across the UK, meaning residents should be prepared for the risk of flooding.
