Moderate shallow earthquake on the shores of the Black Sea

Epicenter close to Anapa. The epicenter was under land and shallow ! As this area of the world has no frequent earthquakes people seems to have been really frightened with the shaking.

The earthquake happened 16km from Verkhnebakanskiy. The nearest populated places are: Rayevskaya (16km), Gaykadzory (18km), Rassvet (15km), Bol’shevik (15km), Amanat (19km), Anapskaya (17km), Natukhayevskaya (8km), Sergeyevskiy (12km), Kamatyr’ (12km), Grecheskoye (18km), Ol’khovka (19km), Mnogopol’nyy (12km), Damanskiy (16km), Khutora Vozdvizhenskiye (17km), Kutok (8km), Krasnyy Pakhar’ (8km), Gladkovskaya (12km), Shumayka (4km), Akkermanka (10km), Novomikhaylovskiy (18km), Gostagayevskaya (8km), Shkol’nyy (8km), Sirotskiy (13km), Pavlovskiy (19km), Chekon (15km), Novogeorgiyevskiy (18km), Yurovka (20km), Varenikovskaya (17km), Varenikovskaja (17km). The closest civilian airport is Anapa / Olkhovka (19km).Update 18:31 UTC : The power went off at Novorossiysk which adds to the frightening experience (the earthquake happened in the Russian evening hours)

Busy, busy busy …

We got dizzy here from the many earthquakes at the same time – no relation certainly but first a moderately dangerous one in Chile  followed by a massive quake in Indonesia and a short time thereafter quakes in Peru and Russia (see list).

Why harmless : because the hypocenter is at +150 km in the hot solid mantle of the earth.

This generates shaking in a huge area (probably the reason that so many Australians are online at the moment).

Normally NO danger for a tsunami though (too deep).

Update 17:14 UTC : The expected shaking will be light to very weak in a radius of +1000 km. Most people will sleep though it we think and hope.

Update 17:19 UTC : The quake struck in an area were 2 major fault lines meet in the middle of the ocean.

Moderate shallow earthquake in Central Chile

 Epicenter very close to Penehue.

The international agencies are reporting a depth from 23 to 29 km.

Universidad de Chile Santiago reports a Magnitude of Ml4.7 at a depth of 45 km.

Onemi Chile has however published a strong shaking in and near Toltén (MMI VI), surprising if we look at the Magnitude and depth.   The main reason for these high intensities is probably the soil composition (soft soil).
