A timeline to war on Syria

UN Ambassador: Trying to Avert WAR between U.S. and Russia

12 April, 2018
Russia's UN ambassador Vassily Nebenzia says the "immediate priority is to avert the danger of war" following a closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council concerning Syria.

Asked if he was referring to war between the US and Russia, he says: "We cannot exclude any possibilities unfortunately because we saw messages that are coming from Washington. They were very bellicose.

"They know we are there, I wish there was dialogue though the proper channels on this to avert any dangerous developments.
"The danger of escalation is higher than simply Syria because our military are there... so the situation is very dangerous."
UPDATE 3:49 PM -- These remarks came after there was an unannounced Security Council meeting at the UN here in New York City which was kept pretty much under wraps, seen as a last chance. It didn't go very well as you can see.
UPDATE 3:55 PM EDT -- I'm told some of the back channel talks with Russia have broken down and broken down badly, which rather ties in with what the Russian UN ambassador said a few mins ago.
UPDATE 3:59 PM -- President Trump has been meeting with his National Security Team at the White House, including Defense Secretary James Mattis "What's going on now is they're deciding on two things: The scope of the response by the U.S. and our coalition partners, And, number two: the timing of it."
Earlier today UK Cabinet ministers gave Prime Minister Theresa May a green light for strikes on the Assad regime in Syria.
UPDATE 4:06 PM EDT -- Russia: We will protect our troops in Syria from US missiles

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, said the current situation with Donald Trump threatening to launch missiles at Syrian government forces is a "test for each and every country in the world to protect its people on the ground."

Russia and Iran are the Assad regime's allies in the Syrian civil war.

The Kremlin on Wednesday said the US and its allies - France, Germany and the UK - should "seriously consider" the consequences of their threats to launch military action.

RELATED CONTEXT:

The Russian president and Israeli prime minister were at angry cross-purposes in their phone conversation on Wednesday, April 11.  Vladimir Putin warned Benjamin Netanyahu to discontinue Israeli strikes in Syria because they may rock the Assad regime [backed by Moscow] and insisted on Israel respecting Syrian sovereignty and security. By this warning, Russia clamped down on the freedom the Israeli air force had hitherto enjoyed in Syrian air space for striking hostile elements, primarily Iran and Hizballah.
Netanyahu shot back, according to our sources, that Israel cannot possibly desist from action over Syria, since this would leave Iran at liberty to establish a permanent, hostile military presence in that country. And so, said the prime minister, Israel would have to persevere in its efforts to stop this happening. The conversation between Putin and Netanyahu ended in total discord.
UPDATE 4:27 PM (COVERT INTEL) US bombing Syria will allegedly be met with terrorist attacks across US and EU.  Be prepared.
UPDATE 4:30 PM -- White House Meeting on Syria may have concluded. Joint chiefs of staff, Director of National Intelligence (DNI), and the UN Ambassador have left.
